CRIME NEWS

  • Lori Vallow Daybell was convicted this week in Arizona for conspiring to kill her former husband in Chandler—taxpayers have spent over $85,000 on a $640 booking fee and $137 daily charges over 512 days, and she will next face trial in Maricopa County before returning to Idaho to serve life sentences for earlier convictions.  12 News
  • A road rage incident led to a shooting on SR 347 this morning — causing a massive traffic backup.  12 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Seton Catholic Prep will break ground on its new event center on April 30 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.—the 50,000 square-foot facility will include a gymnasium, weight room, film review room, office spaces and a spin-class room to serve both school and community events. The project was made possible by a $7 million gift from Shea Homes plus additional funding from community supporters.  Chandler Independent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Salt River Project partnered with Chandler and Apache Junction to remove 59 trees near power lines and plant 264 new trees before the monsoon for improved power safety and expanded shade — the project replaced each removed tree with three in Apache Junction and six in Chandler at local parks, libraries, and City Hall. SRP advises customers to call if they see trees growing too close to power lines.  Chandler Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State officials from the Arizona Gaming Department ordered four gaming companies & about a half-dozen subsidiaries to stop illegally targeting Arizonans by offering unlicensed bets on sports, horse racing & casino games because their operations hurt the local economy and could lead to felony charges such as money laundering.  KJZZ
  • Gov. Katie Hobbs signed an executive order on April 22 to launch Reentry 2030 - a bipartisan initiative designed to offer job training and personal development for people released from prison. The program partners with the Department of Justice, AHCCCS, and the Arizona Office of Economic Opportunity - efforts set to reduce recidivism and boost public safety.  KJZZ
