COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chandler will hold listening sessions on May 14 at 5:30 p.m. and May 17 at 10:30 a.m. at the Downtown Library to gather input for its General Plan update — the city has also expanded its Instant Language Assistant program after it won a Smart Cities award. Other events this week include a Farmers Market running on Saturdays through May, a Golden Neighbors birthday celebration on May 8, a 1950s Rock n Roll Senior Prom on May 9 and several community meetings and training sessions.  Chandler Arizonan

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Northern Arizona University renamed its College of Engineering, Informatics, and Applied Sciences to the Steve Sanghi College of Engineering on April 25 in Flagstaff — honoring a $10 million gift from Maria and Steve Sanghi. Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs and about 150 guests attended the ceremony.  Chandler Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On April 24, city leaders met to discuss extending Washington Street from Southside Village to Pecos Road to ease traffic & spur new retail and housing. The council said the plan moves the street slightly east to give residents a buffer & add traffic lights for improved access to local businesses.  Chandler Arizonan
  • Chandler City Council settled a lawsuit for $300,000 after a police aide ran a red light in a November 2023 collision that injured Kevin and Megan McCarthy and caused major vehicle damage—council also approved a contract to keep Chandler Flex microtransit operating, authorized a $750,000 grant application to improve Pima Park, and submitted its Community Development Block Grant plan for local public projects.  Chandler Arizonan
  • The city of Chandler has renewed its contract with River North Transit — extending the Chandler Flex ride-share service through June 30, 2027. The service, launched in 2022, lets riders book minivan trips via an app with fares starting at $2 and discounts for students, seniors and wheelchair-accessible riders.  KTAR
  • The Arizona Department of Transportation reached a milestone on the I-10 Wild Horse Pass Corridor Project when crews shifted westbound I-10 traffic onto a new eastbound bridge over the Gila River in early April while beginning removal of the old bridge. Local leaders — including Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke — and community members visited the site to observe the process, which will take 8 to 10 months and have the new westbound bridge completed in early 2026.  Chandler Independent
  • Chandler City Council met May 4th to review economic and development challenges and set priorities for future growth. Officials narrowed their goals—focusing on key projects as the city adjusts its plans.  Chandler Independent
