- ➤ A dead body was found in Sun Lakes early Saturday at about 5:30 a.m. near Cherrywood Drive — Dobson Road south of Chandler, prompting deputies to respond and detectives to begin a suspicious death investigation. KTAR
- ➤ Christopher Pelkey’s family created an AI video that used his likeness to speak for him—its message of forgiveness was played at the sentencing hearing where Gabriel Paul Horcasitas was given a 10.5-year prison term after fatally shooting Pelkey in November 2021. 12 News

- ➤ Walmart staff volunteered during a late-April service day at Conley Elementary School in Chandler to improve the campus after its recent remodeling; they refreshed the staff lounge+ installed new planter boxes, repainted foursquare courts, painted a fun activity trail, and built storage sheds+ and shaded picnic tables now in use by students. - ➤ Michelle Solano, a West Valley mother who faced homelessness when she was 15, graduated from Estrella Mountain Community College on Friday night with an associate's degree in applied science and organizational management+ she now plans to attend Northern Arizona University to earn her bachelor's degree and show others that they can overcome hardship. 12 News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A new study by Next Generation Sonoran Desert Researchers found that iconic Sonoran cactuses have been hurt by prolonged drought and strong heat waves from 2020 and 2021, which acted like a severe sunburn on them. The study measured over 1,000 saguaros from the Desert Botanical Garden to parts of Baja California—showing that extreme heat made it hard for the plants to make food. KJZZ

- ➤ Gov. Hobbs vetoed a bill (HB 2824) that would have allowed select lawmakers and county sheriffs to arrest those who refused to testify before the Legislature. The governor said the measure could intimidate Arizonans and argued that holding someone in contempt should be decided by the full legislative body (not individual members). KJZZ
- ➤ The westbound Loop 202 on-ramp at McQueen Road will close at 11:30 p.m. today for about 60 days for ramp reconstruction as part of the widening project between Val Vista and Loop 101. Drivers are advised to take detours at Cooper Road or Arizona Avenue. Chandler Independent
