  • Governor Hobbs signed Preston’s Law to create a new swarming offense after the death of Chandler resident Preston Lord—while the Crayola Experience in the mall will close on June 15 and the Education Foundation awarded a record $335,200 in scholarships to 239 seniors. Chandler police will run a seatbelt campaign from May 19 to June 1, the Goddard School opened at 244 W. Chandler Heights Road, a new Code Enforcement Academy session starts on June 11, cooling centers have been open since May 1, Ryan Reeves was named 2025 Airport Executive of the Year, an AI event is set for May 20 at ASU MIX Center, the Chamber Awards are on May 29, and attorney Benjamin Gottlieb earned Super Lawyer recognition—showing a busy week of local news.  Chandler Arizonan
  • Chandler’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Division will support three Juneteenth and Freedom Week events in the city. Culture Music in the Park will take place on June 14 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Dr. A.J. Chandler Park West—Chandler will also host the Miss Juneteenth Arizona Scholarship and Pageant on June 13 at Chandler Center for the Arts and the Juneteenth Father’s Day Mixer on June 15 at Singing Pandas Asian Restaurant and Bar.  City of Chandler
  • On May 17, the city unveiled an 11,000 square feet expansion of Tumbleweed Recreation Center in Tumbleweed Park to create a flexible, inclusive space for all ages. The upgraded facility now offers a new senior drop-in zone (Saguaro Social Club), a large fitness studio, and creative rooms along with rental spaces (weddings, baby showers, family reunions) while using a key fob system to track usage and guide upcoming programs.  Chandler Arizonan

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Chandler police said a 3-year-old boy named Trigg Kiser—who had been hospitalized since May 12 after being rescued from a backyard pool on Ashley Drive—died Sunday as his case remains under investigation.  Chandler Independent

CRIME NEWS

  • On Nov. 13th, 2021, a road rage incident in Chandler led to veteran Chris Pelkey’s death and the manslaughter conviction of Gabriel Paul Horcasitas—whose 10.5-year sentence marked the first U.S. sentencing hearing to use an AI-generated victim impact statement that recreated the victim’s voice—leaving a legal first in its wake.  Chandler Arizonan

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chandler Unified School District will present four bond election options at its Governing Board meeting on June 11 to secure funds for needed renovations after voters rejected a $487.5 million request last year. Officials will also hold a May 30 presentation to answer questions before deciding if an election later this year will offer voters two borrowing measures and an override to fund school upgrades—property taxes will remain unchanged.  Chandler Arizonan
  • An investigation found Arizona’s voucher program, started in summer 2022, is causing top public districts including Chandler to lose students and millions in state funds as families switch to private or home schooling; the program is projected to cost taxpayers $1 billion in the upcoming school year. Lawmakers plan to vote later this month on a constitutional amendment that may make the voucher program permanent + the debate continues over its impact on high-performing schools.  12 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chandler will open its first overnight cooling center this summer at the Chandler Senior Center during extreme heat warnings—providing about 30 spaces for people to rest safely. The move comes after last summer's record-high nighttime temperatures drove high demand for heat relief.  KJZZ
  • Last week, Gov. Katie Hobbs signed two new laws that give APS protection from most lawsuits when its equipment causes wildfires and let the utility issue bonds to cover costs for old power plants. The measures—years in the making—affect other utilities and have critics worried about too much power in one monopoly.  KJZZ
