CULTURE NEWS

  • Artist Mike Margolis will open his 'Shifting to Joy' exhibition at the Gallery at the Chandler Center for the Arts on May 24 and it will run until Aug. 2. A public reception is set on May 30 from 6-8 p.m. (the gallery is at 250 N. Arizona Ave.)  City of Chandler

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • House lawmakers approved a bill on Tuesday to close loopholes in animal cruelty laws by expanding definitions to include failing to give pets proper medical care, food and water—spurred by a Chandler case that exposed severe neglect; the measure passed by a 41—13 vote and awaits a final roll-call before moving to the Senate.  Chandler Independent
  • Chandler announced that on Memorial Day, May 26, city offices, the Recycling-Solid Waste Center, libraries, and several community centers and museums will be closed while trash and recycling continue and pools remain open from noon to 5 p.m. Tumbleweed Recreation Center and Chandler Tennis Center will operate holiday hours, and the Recycling-Solid Waste Center will switch to summer hours on May 29—open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday through Monday—so residents know what to expect.  City of Chandler
  • After a closed-door session and public meeting on May 19, Mayor Kevin Hartke said he could not share details regarding the charter dispute—city leaders are expected to decide on his term on Thursday.  Chandler Independent
  • Maricopa County taxpayers are projected to pay $352M by midsummer for legal and compliance costs tied to actions from Joe Arpaio’s tenure—$34M of which was approved by the county board on Monday. County officials and legal experts continue to debate ending court supervision as the sheriff’s office works to complete court-ordered reforms.  KTAR
  • Animal advocates gathered today at the state capitol in Phoenix to urge lawmakers to vote on SB 1658, a bill that would require proper food, water, shelter, and medical care for companion animals — officials say the measure would have allowed Chandler PD to act sooner in a recent case of neglected dogs. The bill awaits a final House vote before returning to the Senate — legislators are expected to review it next week.  12 News
