COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Arizona Humane Society has cared for over 13,000 animals this year and now has 1,000 pets in shelters and nearly 1,000 in foster homes — the highest numbers in its 68-year history. It is hosting a one-day free adoption event today — all pets have zero-dollar fees at three local locations.  12 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Arizona Public Service and Salt River Project say they will see record-breaking power demand this summer — they expect loads about 3% higher than last summer’s records. Both utilities are ready to handle up to 8,491 megawatts and 8,436 megawatts when hot afternoons strain air conditioners.  KJZZ

CRIME NEWS

  • State officials said they sent cease and desist letters to five companies and seven subsidiaries for operating online gambling platforms suspected of laundering money and targeting Arizonans—marking the third such enforcement action since December.  KJZZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chandler City Council has picked John Pombier as acting city manager to start on July 13. He has over 27 years of public service and a background with Amazon—City Council will begin a national search in early 2026 after City Manager Josh Wright said he will leave on August 1.  City of Chandler
  • Chandler City Council awarded agreements on June 26 for the Turf to Xeriscape program that will convert about 25 acres of turf in stormwater retention basins into desert-adapted landscapes north of the Loop 202 Santan Freeway. The first phase will replace turf with water-saving trees and plants and is partly funded by a WIFA grant—expected to reduce water use by about 22.5 million gallons per year.  City of Chandler
  • Chandler city offices, libraries, the museum, community centers, and arts facilities will be closed on Friday, July 4 for Independence Day—pools will open at regular times without lap swimming and trash and recycling will be collected as scheduled.  Chandler Independent
