  • On Sunday, volunteers and local organizations held a back-to-school bash that provided school supplies and essential items for 60 foster kids; the event helped ensure these children have what they need for the upcoming school year.  12 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Maricopa County authorities indicted Adam Sheafe, 51, on July 18 for murdering New River pastor William Schonemann—he faces charges including first-degree murder, burglary, and kidnapping after his extradition from Coconino County and admitted to the crime in a jailhouse interview.  12 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown Chandler's The Uncommon has launched a series of no-cover shows that will feature local music talent and offer bargain food and drink specials nearly every night. The venue at Boston Street and Arizona Avenue will host country act RowdyRed on July 23 from 8 to 11 p.m. and will schedule more acts in the coming weeks.  Chandler Independent

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Chandler’s economic development director Micah Miranda received the Policymaker of the Year award from the Association for Career Technical Education of Arizona at the ACTE annual conference awards breakfast in Tucson—his leadership forged partnerships with local school districts, colleges and businesses that have helped create new career pathways for students.  Chandler Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At its July 14 work session, the Chandler City Council debated three utility rate increase options to fund water, wastewater and solid waste services—leaving council evenly split as they plan to brief an absent member and poll again before presenting a public notice on Oct. 16, with final adoption on Jan. 22 and rates rising on March 2. Residents may see different impacts depending on whether the council chooses a plan that shifts costs between household and industrial users like Intel.  Chandler Arizonan
  • On July 17, the Chandler City Council approved a contract for the municipal airport that covers hangar-area pavement reconstruction—one of several projects aimed at updating airport facilities.   • Scottsdale was named the sixth-best U.S. city for recreation in a nationwide WalletHub study that ranked cities on park quality, weather, entertainment and costs—Arizona cities Phoenix, Tucson, Glendale and Chandler also placed in the top 50.  KTAR

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A WalletHub report showed Arizona was a top state for first-time home buyers even though 2024 saw a drop in their market share—Surprise ranked fourth, Gilbert sixth, and Chandler eleventh among 300 cities analyzed. The study revealed first-time buyers made up 24% of the market in 2024, down from 32% in 2023.  KTAR
