Good morning, Chandler. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 1st of August.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chandler neighborhood-watch groups that hosted last year's Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods event are invited to submit nominations for the Mayor’s Neighborhood Excellence awards online by Sunday, Aug. 10 — the awards honor neighborhoods for active community efforts. Prizes include up to $1,000 toward fall GAIN events and a visit from Mayor Kevin Hartke — online voting for the People’s Choice award runs from Aug. 13 through Aug. 24 with winners announced at the GAIN kickoff event on Sept. 20 at Chandler Police headquarters community room.  Chandler Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Jacobsen Elementary, Chandler Unified reassigned a part-time language specialist position ahead of the new school year and retired teacher Kimberly Christ and other educators said they were devastated by the change. School leaders maintained the move was part of routine summer staffing adjustments — not a termination of a state-required program.  Chandler Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former state lawmaker Alfredo Gutierrez, known for his immigrant activism and efforts to build consensus in Arizona politics, died on July 30; local leaders recalled his lasting impact on the state. Garden expert Melissa Kruse-Peeples also explained how simple shade techniques can protect plants from extreme summer heat.  KJZZ
  • On July 30th, a Maricopa County Superior Court judge rejected Arizona’s request to dismiss a class action lawsuit over Medicaid fraud involving thousands of victims and a $2.8 billion scheme from 2019—citing the state’s alleged negligence in stopping the fraud—and the case will continue through the legal process.  KJZZ
  • The Arizona Department of Transportation warned Chandler residents that fake texts using its Motor Vehicle Division logo are circulating and requesting payment for unpaid traffic citations. The department said suspicious wording, foreign area codes + poor grammar indicate the texts are not genuine.  KJZZ
  • Alfredo Gutierrez, a longtime lawmaker, veteran, and immigrant rights activist, died at 79 and is remembered by local leader Lydia Guzman and former Speaker Rusty Bowers for his work to unite communities—his legacy remains a strong part of Arizona politics.  KJZZ
  • Chandler was shown as a model of strong finances at a meeting by the National League of Cities, where city officials said careful planning helped keep AAA ratings since 2010 and earn a top tax revenue rating in 2023. The city will hold a Special Bond Election on Nov. 4 to fund projects for parks, recreation, fire, police and streets — a step built on smart planning.  City of Chandler
  • The westbound Loop 202 off-ramp at Price Road in Chandler closed at 11:30 p.m. on July 31 for about 60 days to let crews reconstruct the ramp — part of the Loop 202 improvement project costing 200 million dollars. It will reopen in late September and drivers were advised to use the exit at Dobson Road.  Chandler Independent
