COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office and Chandler Police Department will host a free forum on youth violence on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Chandler Public Safety Training Center—Common Ground: A Teen Safety Forum—where leaders will talk about trends and plans to keep kids safe.  ABC 15

  • Joe Gerace, once a food nomad who worked in Caribbean beach bars and Denver food trucks, has opened Little Joe’s Italian Market in Gilbert—just steps from his Chandler home—with his partner Allie Lewis as he puts down roots locally.  Chandler Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At an Aug. 20 study session, assistant superintendent Jennifer Fletcher asked the board for clear feedback on a review of 12 school metrics—staff will present revised proposals in the fall.  Chandler Independent
  • Chandler teen Brad Wu was awarded a $50,000 Davidson Fellows Scholarship for his engineering project that built a brain-controlled robotic arm to help stroke patients move again—his work is part of the program’s 25th anniversary and will support his future studies in engineering.  Chandler Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chandler City Council declared August as Drowning Impact Awareness Month after Mayor Kevin Hartke read a proclamation on Aug. 11 with local safety leaders to stress pool safety. Officials urged use of the ABCDs for water safety—adult supervision, barriers, classes and devices—and reported that a 4-year-old boy drowned on June 29 along with 31 drowning deaths in Maricopa County by Aug. 11.  Chandler Independent
  • After nearly a decade of inactivity, the Chandler Sister Cities program is starting up again under nonprofit president Mahfam Moeeni-Alarcon, who has helped secure city support and funding for a renewed effort. City officials have begun talks with two cities and are getting to know four others—hoping to build new ties beyond the current relationship with Tullamore.  Chandler Arizonan

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study tracking about 80 patients in Pennsylvania found that more than half of those using medical marijuana for chronic musculoskeletal pain stopped treatment within a year—citing dissatisfaction, side effects or the choice to have surgery instead. Arizona also offers medical marijuana for pain, even though enrollment in its program has declined in recent years.  KJZZ
