The 69th annual Tumbleweed Tree Lighting & Parade of Lights will take place on Dec.
6 in Downtown Chandler with free entry and live performances by local groups starting at 4:30 p.m. The event will include a parade at 6:45 p.m. and the lighting of the 35-foot Tumbleweed Tree at about 8 p.m.—guests should arrive early to secure parking and a good viewing spot.
Chandler teacher Donna Gustafson solved the mystery of Air Force Technical Sergeant Thomas J Walker, a wartime hero whose plane was hit in France in 1943—she found his name in Allied tribunal records that showed he was executed by German SS soldiers.
Her research for the Silent Heroes program will be shared with her classes and posted online.
More than a thousand Arizona teachers resigned in recent months, worsening the teacher shortage in schools including in Chandler—school officials are now exploring new ways to hire replacements.
State transportation officials announced that a section of Loop 101 in Scottsdale is closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for widening work—drivers are advised to use southbound State Route 51 as a detour.
In addition, parts of Loop 202 in Chandler and Ahwatukee will face pavement sealing and maintenance closures with drivers directed to take alternate routes on Chandler Boulevard or Ray Road.
Shafeeka Brown opened a Memory Café at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Chandler to support those with dementia and their caregivers.
Held on the first and third Friday of each month, the café offers music, crafts, and conversation (meant to spark memories and ease isolation).
