- ➤ Local residents raised money for St. Vincent de Paul during Turkey Tuesday—donations from the event will support the charity’s work. Organizers said the fundraiser brought neighbors together for a shared cause. 12 News
- ➤ A navy veteran now volunteers in the family dining room at St. Vincent de Paul—bringing warmth to every interaction as part of an ongoing effort to help those in need. The veteran finds renewed purpose in giving back to the community through daily service. 12 News
- ➤ The Chandler Fire Department is collecting toys this holiday season and will host its Holiday Toy Ride from 12-6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7 at Chandler Fashion Center where donors receive a ride in a fire engine—drop-off points include a tree lighting event on Dec. 6 and the Fire Administration Headquarters through Dec. 14. - ➤ Chandler will host the 69th annual Tumbleweed Tree Lighting and Parade of Lights on Saturday, Dec. 6 in downtown Chandler with free admission and live performances from Just Dance, Arizona Dance Studio and Vocal Connection Chorus starting at 4:30 p.m. The parade begins at 6:45 p.m. and the Tumbleweed Tree is lit around 8 p.m.—attendees are advised to arrive early to secure parking and view festive floats and dancers. - ➤ For 33 years, 12News has partnered with St. Vincent de Paul and the Bashas’ family of stores to purchase meals for people in need this Thanksgiving season — the ongoing effort supports local families with important help beyond the holiday. 12 News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Chandler Unified School District is offering free weekend lunch to all children up to age 18 through the end of November and may extend the program later — no ID is needed. The free meal service runs during Thanksgiving weekend to help all students get a nutritious meal. Chandler Independent
- ➤ Chandler Unified School District received its best ever letter grade report, earning an overall A, but only 53% of students met math proficiency. The district will review the i-Ready math curriculum through January 11th and plans teacher training if the board approves the change in February — aiming to boost math scores next school year. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The Arizona Humane Society (AHS) warned pet owners to keep pets safe this Thanksgiving by avoiding foods like stuffing with onions and mushrooms as well as desserts with xylitol and alcohol. The society also recommended that owners set aside a quiet space for pets and remain alert to scams that falsely claim pet injuries and demand immediate medical payments. KTAR
