If you cross the Salt River bed or planned a paddle on , heads up. Salt River Project raised its releases from Bartlett and Stewart Mountain dams to 54,000 (403,000 gallons per second) as storms keep hitting the Salt and Verde watersheds. Several roads built in the riverbed in the East and West Valley will close.

Tempe closed Tempe Town Lake to all on-water recreation until further notice, including paddle boating, kayaking, rowing and sailing. Parks around the lake stay open, and fishing is still allowed. We suggest watching for road-closure signs near the riverbed.

  • Releases: expected to last several days
  • Verde inflows: October and November likely highest since 1972
  • Verde inflows: about eight times the average

A National Weather Service flood warning for Maricopa County stays in effect until the afternoon of Nov. 7. Gov. Katie Hobbs declared a state of emergency Nov. 2 after storms that claimed two lives.

The releases and closures have built since Nov. 1

  1. Nov. 1 releases about 20,000 from Bartlett and Stewart Mountain dams.
  2. Nov. 1Tempe closes to on-water recreation until further notice.
  3. Nov. 1SRP increases the releases to 54,000 cubic feet per second.
  4. Nov. 2Gov. Hobbs declares a state of emergency.
  5. Nov. 2Larger releases are expected to reach the Valley by 6 p.m.

SRP's board weighs a data center pause, but its lawyer says state law likely stands in the way

If you get power from , whose territory includes parts of Mesa, Tempe and Chandler, the board talked data centers Monday. Members asked utility staff about curtailing new data center interconnection agreements, amid concerns that residential customers may end up subsidizing the AI boom. Director Krista O'Brien said she'd heard SRP plans to grow by 4,700 megawatts by 2035, with 3,000 of those going to data centers. Chief legal executive Michael O'Connor said that seemed plausible.

“I find it very hard to believe that we are not shifting costs to other customer classes.”

O'Connor said a moratorium is unlikely to pass because state law says SRP must serve any eligible customer. John Tucker, SRP's director of financial strategy, said SRP collects costs tied to 80% of a data center's peak demand up front, and that data centers pay more than it costs to serve them.

  • Infrastructure bills to data centers: "nine-figure," Tucker said
  • Water supply: little public discussion before executive session
  • Board then met in executive session on the item

On a lighter SRP note, a great horned owl returned to the wild at a Mesa park, released by the SRP worker who saved her weeks earlier.
