Election Day

Chandler-Gilbert Community College voters faced long lines and printer trouble on Election Day

If you tried to vote at Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Tuesday, you probably met a line. About 10:30 a.m., Maricopa County Elections reported a high volume of voters there and pointed people to Tumbleweed Recreation Center in Chandler or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Catalina Street in Gilbert.

Lines built at the college through Election Day, Nov. 3

  3. 11:30 a.m.The county's map showed a 45-minute wait and more than 120 voters in line there.
  4. 7 p.m.Polls were set to close; anyone in line by then could still vote.

“We know that voters are still able to be served. Voters can still drop off their ballots. We have teams throughout the Valley … that are ready to triage,”

Zach Shira, assistant county manager

Voter Adrian Pardee told KTAR News 92.3 FM she heard an election worker phoning for help with a printer problem, and said she'd try somewhere else, perhaps Tumbleweed in Chandler. AZ Family reported that most of the county's 254 voting locations ran smoothly. By 4:30 p.m., more than 188,000 voters had visited, short of the county's projection.

Turnout trailed the county's projection of up to 500,000 voters

The Wrap

Fall is tree-planting season in the desert, and Chandler marks Arbor Day in November instead of April for that reason. At the free Chandler's Celebration of Arbor Day on Sat., Nov. 7, at Folley Memorial Park, residents can pick up a five-gallon tree to plant at home, plus a tree care kit. Free tree, free care kit. Not bad.
